Structuring Information and the tone of voice

When I was done with segregating the information, I roughly structured it according to six pages I have. Right now I have taken 'Bilt' long book as a reference to place my information.

Cover Page
The cover page will have name of the topic that will give a rough idea of the message which is explained inside.

...................................................................................................................................................................

Cover Inside
This page will include the information about the 'Bilt's' initiative to do this campaign and an introduction to the topic.

Index Page
An Index page can be designed according to the theme

...................................................................................................................................................................

Last Page beside the ruled page
This page will contain different situations where the child will be given some situations and three possible answers, from which he /she has to choose the correct option. The answers would be given on last page.

...................................................................................................................................................................

Last page of the book
The first page would cover the do's and dont's and also a blank box where a child could note down the emergency numbers, i.e. of his parents, neighbors, nearby relatives, friends or siblings. He also can note down the number of a nearby police station, hospital, or a fire station.

Back inside cover
On the next page, the child plays a role of a detective and searches in the house the things that would be listed in the book. He/she has to see whether their house is free of all hazards mentioned in the list.

...................................................................................................................................................................

Back Cover Page
This page will have picture of a situation and the child has to colour it in his/her way.

...................................................................................................................................................................

Extra page
This extra page which is the extension the last page and can be perforated in order to tear it off the book. This extra page will have different activities on it every time. May be a puzzle or match the objects or some fun activities. In the following photo, I have given a diagram of a triangular pen stand which will have information on it regarding the subject on the other pages of the book.

The need for this extra page is because the child might not wait for the book to get over and then he/she will solve the pages or use the pages for further reference. But they might want to emerge in the activity immediately and also my guide pointed out the fact that many of the long books are covered with brown paper, so this extra page will remain with the child and later when the book is complete or finished the child can remove the cover and see the inside pages again and if willing to, can keep them with him/her.

...................................................................................................................................................................

Tone of voice

It is always the look and feel of the product attracts the users to come and pick it up. For my pages, I decided on following keywords:

For Content:
Educational, Organized, Keeps the child active

For Visual Feel:
Interesing, Eye-catching, Vibrant for kids, Fun, Engaging

Colours:
Multi colour (four colour printing for cover and back page)

Single colour (for front inside, back inside, index and last page of the book)
For single colour printing, Red and it's tints, tone and shades could be used as red being the colour of emergency and warning.

Type of Typography

For my content, I needed typefaces, to which children could relate to. I was mostly searching for bold and character fonts for my heading. For the body text, I was looking at sanserif typeface. Following are three styles with headers and body text.

Other references

Before designing my pages in the long books, my guide asked me to look at the other books available in the market. This research gave me an idea of how pages are sorted by keeping child's behavior and psychology in mind. I learned there are various facts, phrases, puzzles and games in the pages which keep the child informed and active. These simple activities are source of lot of knowledge.

Developing Content

After the research and scenario building, the next step was to categorize the information. I broadly categorized the content in five sections i.e., Types of injuries, Types of hazards, Situational hazards, Hazards related to particular spot in the house and common information that would go in every book.

When all the data was in front, I realized that information for each category varied, so I made combinations of some similar topics, which is as follows:

Various topics which can be combined:
1. Main Categories
2. Structural Hazards + Different spots in house
3. (a)Chemical & Organic hazards + Poisoning
    (b)Fire hazards + Burns & Scalds
4. Electrical Hazard + Power Outage
5. (a) Sprains + Falls
    (b) Fractures + Bleeding

Selecting the right medium

After I had created scenarios and collected the essential information for my content, my guide suggested me to look upon the three aspects for this project which are following:

1. What is it that I want to communicate?
My message is very simple. I need to make children aware of the hazards lying in their house and educate them for responsibly tackling them.

2. To whom I have to communicate?
Primary target - Children
Secondary target - Parents
Tertiary target - Schools

3. What is the medium of communication?
I have listed few possible mediums:

A Board Game
Advantages:
- An interesting way to teach children.
- It educates children without them knowing that they are learning important issues so easily.
- Can be played in a group with friends and family, thus creates platform for everyone to be together.

Disadvantage:
- A parent has to buy it.
- A board game cannot be easily accessible to everyone.
- There is a possibility that the cost of the game cannot be affordable for many middle income families.
...................................................................................................................................................................

An Activity Book
(publication)
Advantages:
- It can be an interactive book.
- The book can be issued by school so it is affordable and compulsory.

Disadvantage:
- It is a possibility that children might feel burden to complete the book and give it back.
- Children might just complete and finish the book for the sake of submission.
- There is no after use of the activity book. The book once solved or completed may not be referred again.
...................................................................................................................................................................

Installation
Advantages:
- It is an interesting medium. Here the child will remember the hazards if visually represented.
- The child does not have to read, he can practically learn.
- Can be initiated by schools to demonstrate students about the hazards through installation.
- Children will be able to relate with it and gain confidence to face any situation when it occurs.
- As this activity is performed in class, children might take interest in it as they like to learn together rather than in isolation.

Disadvantage:
- Lack of interaction with the object.
- As this is a one time demonstration, there is no recall value. It cannot be further referred.
...................................................................................................................................................................

Activity pages in front and back of long notebooks
(Navneet, Classmate, Bilt etc)
Advantages:
- A child can carry the book wherever he/she wants.
- The first and the last page can be perforated so that after using the book, he/she can tear it off and keep it with them for further reference.
- The child does not have to buy specially a different book to get aware of the hazards.
- The information can be given in interesting way of puzzles and small activities that children can solve.
- Each book will have a different hazard information which the child can read as well as solve and tear the page and keep with him.
- Also there can be supplementary stationary attached with the book like bookmarks, stickers, pocket calender etc.

I feel that incorporating activity pages in a long book will be appropriate medium for my project as it will deliver the message what I want to. It has a recall value. There is an engagement factor involved and also the reach of this product is high because every child buys a long book for there academic use.

Brainstorming II

After the jury feedback, talking to concerned people, teachers and parents, looking at the current school books, my guide asked me to look at all the information I have and segregate it according to different categories. So I did my second part of brainstorming considering all the stakeholders related to my topic.
